Classroom Settings

In some ways, live Zoom classes are similar to your traditional face-to-face classes — your instructor can present information and interact with you and your classmates in real time — in other ways, there are some important differences.

Classroom Participation

In a physical classroom, your instructor is free to move around, students can switch seats for group discussions and visual cues between students and the instructor are easier to recognize. Online classes using Zoom makes breakout groups and different arrangements of learners possible in the classroom. Your instructor will manage the class as a whole and may enable features like breakout rooms, polling, whiteboard and screen sharing. or presenter to manage the group as a whole.

Communication Channels

Be prepared to mute your audio.

Online classrooms are typically setup for participants to share both audio and text-based conversations.

Be sure to test your audio settings before the class begins and mute audio when you are not speaking. Give yourself time to toggle the mute/unmute function and wait for another speaker to finish talking before you enable your microphone.

The built-in text function can serve as a back channel for students to engage further in the conversation, by sharing links for topical content, uploading files for the class, and providing constructive commentary to other classmates. Your instructor will modify text settings as needed for your course.

Visual Representation and Feedback

Be prepared to share your video.

In online classes, the use of visual feedback is generally encouraged.

Check with your instructor on specific video requirements. Your visual feedback helps your instructor adapt the message and engage directly with you and your classmates, just as if you were in the same room.

In the online classroom, your instructor may introduce tools like polling and status indicators to obtain your feedback.

How do I access my professor’s Zoom classroom?

Joining a Zoom webinar is simple! In most cases, your professor will send you a meeting link or URL via a Canvas announcement or email. Cllick the link and follow the prompts. You may be asked to complete a quick download before entering the session and that’s it!

If your professor has a menu item in your Canvas course labeled “Zoom,” then you can also access the room from the Zoom menu in your course.  When the Zoom menu option is enabled in your Canvas course it will resemble the image below:
